Club Meeting: Hey! What’s that Bird? - A program on birds of the PNW waterways
About this event
Kayaking offers a beautiful way to immerse oneself in nature. It provides an intimate connection with the natural world with minimal impact, often allowing for the opportunity to get close to wildlife and habitats that other modes of transportation might not afford. Birds are an integral part of that experience, and learning to identify them and understand the habitats they need to thrive can enrich the journey.
Join Toby Ross and Cindy Easterson from Puget Sound Bird Observatory (PSBO) on March 11, 2025, to learn about the birds that inhabit these watery spaces. They will share their research and monitoring work with marine and wetland bird species and help you identify some of our most common and exceptional species.
This meeting is online only and open to both members and non-members. Register if you'd like to get email reminders of the meeting.

Toby Ross manages PSBO’s Puget Sound Seabird Survey, which monitors geese, swans, diving and dabbling ducks, loons, grebes, cormorants, gulls, terns, murres, murrelets, guillemots, auklets, and puffins at over 160 sites within the South Salish Sea. He holds a BS in Zoology and an MSc in Applied Ecology and Conservation from UK universities and has dedicated 30 years to global conservation efforts. His work spans invasive species eradication in the Caribbean, lizard research in Mauritius, and protected area development for Tree Kangaroos in Papua New Guinea. Toby’s passion for ornithology grew during his eight years as Science Manager at Seattle Audubon (now Birds Connect Seattle), overseeing community science programs. In addition to project management, Toby runs Alight Tours, guiding birding adventures worldwide with a focus on conservation and community engagement.
Cindy Easterson has served on the Board of Puget Sound Bird Observatory since 2010 and currently serves as Board Treasurer. She is an advocate for engaging community scientists in projects that support the documentation and assessment of local bird populations and wildlife habitats. Cindy manages the Secretive Wetland Bird Monitoring project, which documents the abundance of waterbirds, such as rails, bittern, and herons across Western Washington. She holds an integrated Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree with a focus on Wetland Science from the University of Washington. Cindy is certified as a Marbled Murrelet observer and has received HAZWOPER training for Oiled Wildlife Care.
